Photoemission above the Fermi level

Observing the Magnetic Exchange Splitting in Nickel (PRL 79 (1997) 4465. download full text (1 MB))

Photoemission spectra near the He Iα Fermi level of polycrystalline silver. Non-monochromatized (0. Order) and monochromatized (1. Order) He Iα radiation is used. Displaying the data on a logarithmic scale shows that clean radiation (1. Order) resolves thermally excited electrons up to 5 kT above the Fermi level.

Angular resolved and intensity normalized spectra from Ni(111). At room temperature the d-band exchange splitting is clearly resolved, where the minority d-band peaks above the Fermi level. Beyond the Curie temperature no exchange splitting is found.
